This scarce mint error exhibits doubling on the obverse motto and date. The more dramatic doubling is located on "RUS" the word "TRUST". While some of this doubling can easily be seen with the naked eye (front foot of "R" in "TRUST") a good magnifier is helpful when examining these and other varieties. If you like to look for such varieties, it has been reported that collectors have had some success finding these in 1974 Mint Sets!
What is a Double Die? The name really says it all and contrary to what many collectors first think, Double Dies are not coins that were struck twice. A double die coin is a coin that was struck from a die that had a partial or full doubled image on it. The doubling comes from mistakes in the die preparation process, where more than one image is transferred from the hub to the coin die. Noteworthy doubling has been found on numerous U.S. coins including the 1972 Lincoln Cent and probably the most famous Double Die, the 1955 Double Die Lincoln Cent.
