These scarce coins were included in the Jefferson Coin & Currency set and were the first U.S. Coin issued with this special satin finish since 1916. NGC recognizes these coins as specimens though they are often referred to as matte proofs or satin finish proofs.

1994 Specimen Jefferson Nickels are struck with specially prepared dies which give the coin a somewhat grainy satin finish. The details of these coins are extremely sharp and will rival that of any proof coin.
