Considered by many to be a mediocre president at best, Grant was still elected to two terms, serving from 1869-77. A graduate of West Point in 1843, Grant had a long military career that peaked in the Civil War when he led Union troops to victories at Shiloh, Vicksburg and Chattanooga. In 1863 Grant was given command of all union troops and after two more years of bloody battles forced the confederate's General Lee to surrender at Appomattox in April of 1865.
As president, he led the Reconstruction by signing and enforcing civil rights laws and fighting Ku Klux Klan violence. He helped rebuild the Republican Party in the South, an effort that resulted in the election of African Americans to Congress and state governments for the first time. Despite these civil rights accomplishments, Grant's presidency was marred by economic turmoil and multiple scandals.
After leaving office, Grant traveled the world for two years and was received at many royal receptions. In 1884 he was deep in debt and dying of throat cancer. Just days before his death he finished his memoirs that eventually earned some $450,000, erasing his dept and giving his heirs financial security for years to come.
