What is the difference between proof sets and mint sets? Proof sets contain proof coins - coins that were struck especially for coin collectors. These coins start from highly polished planchets (blanks) and then are struck twice with specially prepared dies. The result is a encredibly sharp detailed coin usually with mirrored fields. Mint sets contain uncirculated coins (coins that were intended to be used as pocket change but never entered circulation) which (at least up until recent times) didn't receive any special treatment before being packaged for sale to collectors. Mint sets usually contain more coins than proof sets as more often than not more than one mint produces coins for circulation while proof coins are generally produced at only one mint. Most modern proof sets come housed in protective hard plastic cases while mint sets (before 2007) are mostly packaged in simple cellophane. 1936-1942 Five And Six Piece Proof Sets
Because they include a proof Mercury dime as well as a proof Walking Liberty half, early proof sets such as these are always in great demand. Mintages range from just 3,837 sets issued in 1936 to 21,120 made in 1942 and, because many ended up in circulation, only a fraction of those amounts survive today. Adding to the demand is the fact that there were no proof sets issued between 1942 and 1950!

1950-1955 Proof Sets
These 5 coin proof sets feature the popular Franklin half and are 10 to 50 times rarer than the sets issued just a few years later. Our early proof sets come housed in custom Capital holders and unlike what you may get elsewhere are choice to gem quality.

1965-1967 "Special" Mint Sets
Though often collected with proof sets, these sets are technically not proof coins. They were struck on specially prepared blanks like proofs, but no proofs were issued during these years.

1968-1972 "S" Proof Sets
The First of the "S" Mint Proofs These 5 coin proof sets contain a 40% silver proof half up through 1970. They were struck in clad thereafter.

1973-1981 "S" Proof Sets
These 6 coin proof sets include a dollar coin.(Eisenhower 1973-78 and Susan B. Anthony 1979-81). In 1976 the mint issued a special Bicentennial 3 Piece Proof set with the Quarter, Half and Dollar only.

1982-1998 "S" Proof Sets
For proof sets issued in these years the mint went back to the 5 coin format as no dollars were minted.

1983-1997 "S" Prestige Proof Sets & 2005-2007 Legacy Proof Sets
Prestige proof sets represent the ultimate in yearly proof sets. Each Prestige Proof set is housed in a deluxe album-style case and includes the standard 5 coins (cent thru half) as well as a commemorative dollar. Many sets have an extra commemorative half dollar as well. Interestingly, the dollars are struck in silver while the extra half dollars are struck in the standard clad composition. All our Prestige sets come in their original box with the certificate of authenticity. Legacy Proof Sets include the standard clad proof set for the year as well as two proof silver commemorative dollars.
