United States gold coins were for circulation from the year 1795 thru 1933. The U.S. gold coin was issued for circulation in six denominations: $1.00, $2.50 (Quarter Eagle), $3.00, $5.00 (Half Eagle), $10.00 (Eagle) and $20.00 (Double Eagle). The total mintage of the U.S. gold coin exceeded 100 million pieces from 8 U.S. mints Private western U.S. mints issued their gold coin with face values as low as 25 cents and as high as $50.00. After some 50 years the U.S. Mint began minting the gold coin again in the form of commemoratives, and a few years later the gold bullion coins.
