Silver dollars were first minted by the United States in 1794 when just 1,758 pieces were struck. Several different designs were used over the years and their popularity peaked with the Morgan Silver Dollar which ran from 1878 to 1921. Most years Morgan Dollars saw mintages which ran in the millions. Peace Dollars represent the last "silver" dollars issued by the U.S. for general circulation. The Peace design was used from 1921 to 1935.
The word "dollar" comes from the German "Thaler", the name given to the first large size European silver coins. These coins became so popular that in the 16th century many other countries began issuing similar coins. The Spanish Dollar, or piece of eight, was widely circulated in the American Colonies, so it was only natural the the "dollar" was officially adopted as the standard monetary unit for the United States. Silver dollars have been a favorite of collectors for well over 100 years and their popularity continues to grow year by year.
