Struck from 1222-1254 AD this gold hyperpyron features an enthroned Jesus Christ on the obverse. The reverse shows John standing left, crowned by the Virgin Mary.

John III Doukas Vatatzes was a very successful and influencial leader of the Nicaean Empire which saw great prosperity during his time as ruler. John prepared the way to restore the Greek rule of Constantinople and the Byzantine Empire.
