What is a Double Die? The name really says it all and contrary to what many collectors first think, Double Dies are not coins that were struck twice. A double die coin is a coin that was struck from a die that had a partial or full doubled image on it. The doubling comes from mistakes in the die preparation process, where more than one image is transferred from the hub to the coin die. Noteworthy doubling has been found on numerous U.S. coins including the 1955 and 1972 Lincoln Cents and the 1995 Double Die Lincoln Cent featured here.
