Martin Van Buren (December 5, 1782 - July 24, 1862) was the eighth President of the United States. Before being president, Van Buren served as the eighth Vice President and the tenth Secretary of State under Andrew Jackson. He was an important early organizer of the Democratic Party and the first president who was not of British or Irish descent. He also is the only president not to speak speak English as a first language, having grown up speaking Dutch. Van Burens administration was largely characterized by the economic hardship of his time, the Panic of 1837 and was voted out of office after one term. Martin Van Buren is one of only two people, the other being Thomas Jefferson, to serve as Secretary of State, Vice-President, and President.
