The 2006 clad proof set includes all five State Quarters that will be issued in 2006. Included are Nevada "The Silver State," Nebraska "Chimney Rock," Colorado "Colorful Colorado," North Dakota "Badlands with Bison," and South Dakota "Mount Rushmore and Pheasant." Each set also includes a proof 2006 Sacagawea "Golden Dollar", Kennedy half-dollar, Roosevelt dime, the new "Return to Monticello" Jefferson nickel, and the ever popular Lincoln cent. Each coin bears an "S" mint mark indicating its a product of the San Francisco Mint.
What are proof coins and how are they made? Proof coins are coins that are struck especially for collectors and have been issued by various mints around the world for more than 200 years. Today's proof coins are extraordinarily brilliant coins with sharp relief (details) and a mirror-like background. Most feature frosted devices giving them a "cameo" appearance. The planchets or "blanks" for proof coins are made with extra care, polished and cleaned. The planchets are then fed into coining presses fitted with hand-polished dies and struck at least two times to ensure sharp, high relief.
