What is the difference between proof sets and mint sets? Proof sets contain proof coins - coins that were struck especially for coin collectors. These coins start from highly polished planchets (blanks) and then are struck twice with specially prepared dies. The result is an incredibly sharp detailed coin usually with mirrored fields. Mint sets contain uncirculated coins (coins that were intended to be used as pocket change but never entered circulation) which, up until recently, didn't receive any special treatment before being packaged for sale to collectors. Mint sets usually contain more coins than proof sets, as more often than not, more than one mint produces coins for circulation while proof coins are generally produced at only one mint. Most modern proof sets come housed in protective hard plastic cases while mint sets (before 2007) are mostly packaged in simple cellophane. Should you buy proof sets or mint sets? From our description, you can see both have their advantages. That being the case, we suggest you collect both!
