This Oklahoma Round Barn release is the fourth in a series of 8. Subsequent releases will represent stops along the famous highway, known as Main Street of America. They will include tourist attractions in Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, and end with the last state on the route, California.
Driving along Route 66 from Kansas, you'll venture into Oklahoma and drive through the old highway town of Arcadia. That is where you'll find the Round Barn (the only truly round one on the entire route). More than 100 years old, this tourist attraction and gift shop was a place that held animals and community events alike. Original owner William Odor built it himself, partially out of spite, as neighbors and friends said a round barn was impossible. He proved them wrong when he completed it in 1898 by soaking the boards while still green to bend and shape them as needed. The barn was used traditionally for hay and livestock, but Odor was also persuaded to install a second floor and flooring in the upper level to host dances, and he obliged. It was restored in 1992 to its current state after some years of deterioration. In its time, it was a architectural wonder and certainly deserves a stop!
