1984 Jefferson Nickel - Partial Brockage On Obverse
The obverse of this Jefferson Nickel shows a partial brockage but is reminiscent of an indent error. The outer edge of the obverse design, including Jefferson's ponytail and shoulder as well as inscriptions Liberty and 1984, are seen in full detail on the left side of the obverse. The indented area to the right shows the same design, but it is enlarged and mirrored. We note some slight residue on the reverse above and below Monticello.
A Brockage Error occurs when a planchet is struck with a coin instead of a die. Similar to an Indent Error, the first coin fails to leave the minting chamber, but then is used to strike the following coin, leaving a distorted mirror image. Hence the reverse design appearing on the obverse.
