The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is the second America The Beautiful coin released for 2016. The obverse of this coin shows the great break in the Appalachian Mountains with a frontiersman looking through to the West. The reverse shows George Washington with the inscriptions of "United States Of America", "Liberty", and "In God We Trust."
The Cumberland Gap established June 11, 1940 is 20,508 acres and borders Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. Known as the "First Doorway To The West", many American settlers used this route to move West. Buffalo and wild deer also used this route to migrate South for Winters and back North for Summers.
The natural beauty of the Cumberland Gap surrounds a 20th Century Kentucky Mountain settlement that was known as the Hensley Settlement which has been preserved by park services. Tours are offered through the Gap Cave and Hensley Settlement. Other activities include lifestyle demonstrations of settlers, music festivals, and living history events.
