Fort Moultrie is the first fort on Sullivan’s island that was built to protect Charleston, South Carolina. Fort Moultrie was named so in honor of Commander Colonel William Moultrie who led the nine hour battle that protected Charleston from British occupation. To date Fort Moultrie has been restored to be able to portray those major points in history that took place on the grounds during and after the American Revolution.
