GSA Carson City Silver Dollars

Morgan Silver Dollars were issued from 1878 to 1921 and are some of the most collected coins in the world. Though several dates saw very low production, most Morgan Dollars saw mintages which ran in the millions. Some of the most popular Morgan Dollars are the Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars discovered in treasury vaults after being forgotten for nearly a century. These dollars were offered for sale in 1973 by the General Services Administration (GSA) and were quickly bought up by collectors and dealers alike.

The word "dollar" comes from the German "Thaler," the name given to the first large size European silver coins. These coins became so popular that in the 16th century many other countries began issuing similar coins. The Spanish Dollar, or piece of eight, was widely circulated in the American Colonies, so it was only natural the the "dollar" was officially adopted as the standard monetary unit for the United States. Silver dollars, such as Morgan Dollars have been a favorite of collectors for well over 100 years and their popularity continues to grow year by year.
